How does Trinity College B1 test booking work?
Everything happens on Trinity’s SELT booking site, in four steps:
- Choose GESE Grade 5 (B1), then a Trinity SELT centre and a date and time.
- Enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID. GOV.UK and Trinity both say you can only book in a new name once your passport or ID shows it.
- Add any extras you want, such as Exam Protect or the study app, and pay.
- Look out for Trinity’s confirmation email with the test, date, time and centre, and check your junk folder if it doesn’t arrive.
GOV.UK says you should be able to take a test within 28 days of booking, but it may not be at the centre nearest you. It also warns that some third-party sellers claim links to the Home Office that they don’t have, and that their fee should be no higher than the price on the provider’s own site.
What Trinity charges
These are Trinity’s own prices. The visa application fee is separate and set by the Home Office.
| Item | Fee |
|---|---|
| GESE Grade 5 (B1) | £160 |
| Exam Protect | £35 |
| GESE Study App | £15 |
| Paper certificate | £12.50 |
You can only add Exam Protect when you book. It covers one resit if you fail, used within 4 months of your original exam date, and one change of date. The paper certificate is optional, as your result comes as a digital certificate.

Your booking email names your centre, so go by that. A few of Trinity’s own centre pages differ from the Home Office list. They give Bristol’s postcode as BS1 2NR and Peterborough’s as PE1 5DD. The Hammersmith page also names 77‑85 Fulham Palace Road, W6 8JA, and the Newcastle page names the Newcastle Deaf Centre, 2 Summerhill Grove, NE4 6EE.
Trinity’s Bradford page says tests there are on Saturdays and every other Sunday, and its Newcastle page says Wednesdays and Saturdays. Its other centre pages say tests can be booked every day of the week, or don’t give days.
Changing your test or missing it
With Exam Protect you can move your test once by calling Trinity’s customer service team on 0333 358 3183. If you turn up without an ID Trinity accepts, you can’t take the test, and Trinity’s ID policy says the fee isn’t refunded.
For a question about a booking, Trinity’s SELT team is on the same number, or at selt@trinitycollege.co.uk. GOV.UK asks you not to contact test centres directly.
Other approved B1 speaking and listening tests
Trinity isn’t the only choice. The Home Office list of approved SELTs taken in the UK has four B1 speaking and listening tests, and each one needs a Pass or its set score:
- GESE Grade 5, from Trinity College London
- IELTS Life Skills B1, from the IELTS SELT Consortium
- LanguageCert International ESOL SELT B1 (Speaking & Listening), from LanguageCert
- PTE Home B1, from Pearson
ESOL here means English for speakers of other languages. Whichever you choose, check the level your visa route asks for before you book. For settlement applications made on or after 26 March 2027 on the routes the Home Office’s Statement of Changes HC 1691 covers, that’s B2, not B1. The overview explains the change and the routes that keep B1.
The English test for a London private hire driver’s licence is a different test. Transport for London (TfL) runs its own speaking and listening test at its Driver Assessment Centres through its provider, PeopleCert, and TfL’s English page doesn’t mention Trinity.
