Are NCARB’s ARE practice exams free?
Yes, for licensure candidates. NCARB has one practice exam for each division, built with the same number of items and tied to the same objectives as the real division, and a demo exam of 75 items drawn from all six. They use the same format and on-screen tools as a real appointment.
With exam eligibility, open the Exams tab of your NCARB Record and go to Additional Resources. Without eligibility, use the “Practice the ARE” link in your Record.
- Test mode copies many of the conditions of a real appointment.
- Practice mode lets you take your time with the tools and shows the correct responses with NCARB’s rationale.
- Both end with a results page: the items you got right and wrong, your percentage in each section, and the rationale for every item.
Every divisional practice exam uses a fixed cut score of about 68%. Real divisions don’t use that figure. NCARB’s own example: you could pass the real Construction & Evaluation (CE) division with 66% and fail its practice exam with the same 66%. The pass rates page explains how real divisions are scored.
NCARB also publishes PDF versions for Architectural Experience Program (AXP) supervisors and mentors. They leave out the case study resources, and NCARB encourages candidates to use the on-screen version.
Do the practice exams make a difference?
NCARB’s own numbers say they do. In 2025, candidates who took an NCARB practice exam before the matching division were 15 percentage points more likely to pass it. The gain was 18 points for Practice Management (PcM) and Project Management (PjM), and 12 points for Programming & Analysis (PA).
Timing seemed to matter too. NCARB found that candidates did best when they took a division within 3 months of finishing the matching AXP experience area. Waiting a year or more went with pass rates 5 to 12 percentage points lower.
The NCARB forum: ARE 5.0 Community
NCARB runs the ARE 5.0 Community as its forum for candidates. Anyone can read it. To post, you sign in through My NCARB, and you can follow topics or people, ask NCARB’s exam staff a question, or set up a study group online or in person.
What you post falls under the ARE Candidate Agreement you accepted when you asked for eligibility. That agreement binds you to keep exam content confidential, so talk about topics and study methods, never the questions you saw.
How do you choose paid architect exam prep?
Paid courses add teaching on top of NCARB’s material: video lessons, question banks, study plans or live coaching. Before you pay, decide what you’re short of. If you mainly want more practice questions, a subscription with practice exams may do. If you keep putting off studying, a fixed program with a schedule and a group may suit you better.
Some things to check on any course page:
- Whether it covers all six divisions or sells them one by one
- How billing works: monthly, yearly or one fee
- What happens when you cancel, and whether there are refunds
- Whether a pass guarantee has terms you’d actually meet
The prices in the comparison table come from each company’s own site. Pass rates that course sellers quote about their own members aren’t NCARB figures.
