What you need
- A desktop or laptop PC running Windows 10 or 11. Macs, Chromebooks, tablets and phones can’t be used to take the exam.
- Chrome, the ETS Online Test application and admin rights on the computer
- One monitor, a wired keyboard and a wired mouse
- A webcam, speakers and a microphone. Headsets and wireless earphones aren’t allowed.
- A smartphone with a front-facing camera and the Proctortrack app, set up to show you and your desk
- A whiteboard or one clear sheet protector with a dry erase marker. Paper isn’t allowed.
Your room
You must be alone in a private room, and nobody can come in. You’ll show the proctor a full 360-degree view of the room and your desk before you start.
Clear the desk, sit on a normal chair, not a bed or couch, and take down any posters or charts about your subject. No food or drink unless it’s an approved accommodation.
How to book a remote exam
- Check that your computer, phone and room meet the requirements.
- Register in My CLEP and choose remote proctoring as your location.
- Watch for your Ticket ID by email within 24 hours.
- Use it to set up Proctortrack and book a session. One reschedule is free, then each costs $10.
CLEP courses online
Lots of people search for online CLEP classes. You don’t need to take a course to sit a CLEP exam. If you want one, Modern States has free self-paced online courses for most exams. College Board also links free online materials for each subject on its study resources pages.
