CLEP passing scores, and how many questions each exam has

CLEP exams are scored from 20 to 80, and the American Council on Education recommends credit for a 50 or higher. That’s why 50 is usually called passing. But your college sets the real rule, and some want more. The number of questions depends on the exam, from about 60 on College Algebra to about 121 on Spanish.

How CLEP scoring works

You get one point for each right answer. Wrong and skipped answers cost you nothing, so never leave a question blank.

Your raw score is then turned into a scaled score from 20 to 80. College Board doesn’t publish a fixed percentage that equals a 50, because the conversion depends on the exam. That’s why we use 60% as a practice target on our own test, not as an official mark.

Some questions on every exam are unscored pretest questions. You won’t know which ones, so treat them all the same.

Your college decides what counts

ACE’s 50 is only a recommendation. Each college decides whether it accepts an exam, what score it wants and how many credits it gives.

Some colleges also won’t give CLEP credit if you’ve already passed a similar college course. So look up your college’s policy before you book, and ask your adviser whether the credit fills a requirement in your degree.

When you’ll see your score

For most exams, your score appears on screen as soon as you finish. College Composition and Spanish with Writing are the exceptions, because people have to score the writing first. College Composition scores take one to two weeks.

Scores from exams taken on or after July 1, 2022 stay available for 10 years.

What about pass rates?

College Board doesn’t publish pass rates on its CLEP site. Numbers you see online come from prep companies or forums, not from CLEP, so don’t rely on them to judge how hard an exam is. The official content outline and sample questions are a better guide.
