How to sign up and schedule a CLEP exam

Signing up and scheduling are two separate steps. First you register and pay in the My CLEP portal on the College Board site. Then you book your time, either with a test center or through Proctortrack if you’re testing at home. There are no fixed test dates, so you can test any time of year.

Step by step

  1. Check your college’s CLEP policy, so you know it gives credit for the exam you want.
  2. Sign in to My CLEP with your College Board account, choose your exam and review your details.
  3. Say whether you have a voucher or DANTES funding, and choose a test center or remote proctoring.
  4. Pick up to 2 colleges to get your score for free, then check out.
  5. For a test center: find one with the search tool and contact it to book a time. Then print your ticket from My CLEP.
  6. For remote testing: use the Ticket ID you get by email within 24 hours to set up Proctortrack and book your session.

College Board says there are more than 2,000 test centers worldwide. Many are at colleges, and there are on-base centers for the military.

What to bring to a test center

Students under 21 with no government ID can use the CLEP Student ID Form instead. Without proper ID, you won’t be allowed to test.

  • Your printed registration ticket
  • A physical, unexpired government photo ID with your signature. The name has to match your ticket.
  • The center’s administration fee and any forms it asks for
  • Your military ID, if DANTES is paying

If you’re in the military

When you register, say you’re eligible for DANTES funding and answer the military questions. The exam fee then shows as $0.00. DANTES pays for your first try at each exam only, and you get a free exam guide for your subject.
