The DAT Perceptual Ability Test (PAT)

Perceptual Ability is the second test of the day: 90 questions in 60 minutes about shapes and space, with no science or math. The DAT perceptual ability test has six question types, from apertures to paper folding. ADA’s free instructions PDF explains each one with a worked example, and its Candidate Guide strongly encourages reading it first.

What’s on the DAT perceptual ability test?

TypeWhat you do
AperturesDecide which opening a 3D object could pass through
View recognitionPick the missing top, front or end view of an object
Angle discriminationRank four angles from smallest to largest
Paper foldingUnfold a folded, hole-punched square in your head and find the holes
Cube countingCount how many cubes in a stack have a given number of painted sides
3D form developmentFind the 3D shape a flat pattern folds into

Rules worth knowing before test day

  • Apertures: you can turn the object any way before it goes in, but not once it’s started. Objects and openings are drawn to the same scale, and only one opening is right.
  • View recognition: the top view is always upper left, the front view lower left and the end view lower right. Lines you can’t see from that side are dotted.
  • Paper folding: the paper is never turned or twisted and always stays inside the original square. Each layer the punch goes through makes a hole.
  • Cube counting: every stack is painted on all sides except the bottom, and the only hidden cubes are the ones needed to hold others up.

Does Perceptual Ability count in your Academic Average?

No. It gets its own 200 to 600 score, and the Academic Average is built from biology, both chemistries, reading and math only. Schools still see your PAT score. In ADA’s 2025 data (March to December), the mean Perceptual Ability score was 406.84.

Where to practice DAT PAT questions

  • ADA’s instructions PDF: free, with one sample question and answer for each type.
  • ADA’s Perceptual Ability 101, 102 and 103 practice sections: 30 questions each, $20 a section. The $100 full practice test includes only PAT 101.
  • DAT Bootcamp and DAT Booster both include PAT practice tests; Booster also lists PAT generators. Chad’s Prep doesn’t cover PAT.
  • Our free 20-question set has no Perceptual Ability questions.
