DAT test dates: when you can take it

There aren’t any fixed DAT test dates. ADA offers the DAT year round at Prometric test centers, so you choose a day from the seats open near you, any time in the six months after ADA processes your application. Seats can fill up, which is why ADA tells you to plan ahead.

How far ahead should you apply and book?

ADA gives two different answers. Its main DAT page says to send your application six to eight weeks before the date you want, and to contact Prometric at least 60 to 90 days ahead because schedules fill up. Its apply page says to send the application 60 to 90 days before your test date.

You can only book with Prometric after ADA confirms you’re eligible, so in our reading, applying about 90 days out covers both pages.

When should you take the DAT?

ADA suggests the spring of your junior year or the summer right after it, once you’ve finished the courses the test covers, especially organic chemistry. Its Candidate Guide says most candidates have done two or more years of college by then, and encourages taking it well before the admission cycle you’re aiming for.

Build in slack. Scores reach your schools three to four weeks after you test, and if you need a retake you must wait at least 60 days.

Are DAT test dates the same in Canada?

It works the same way in Canada: no fixed dates, just open seats at the Prometric locations that offer the DAT there. ADA no longer gives the DAT in Quebec.
