How Duolingo English Test scores are worked out
Every question feeds one of four skill subscores: Reading, Listening, Writing or Speaking. Your overall score is the average of those four, rounded to a score ending in 0 or 5. Duolingo’s Scoring Guide gives an example: 90 in Listening, 100 in Speaking, 110 in Reading and 120 in Writing make an overall 105.
Because parts of the test are adaptive, your score isn’t a count of right answers. Duolingo uses item response theory, which weighs both whether you got a question right and how hard it was. So two people can see different questions and still get comparable scores.
Duolingo English Test subscores
Reports from July 1, 2024 on show four skill subscores alongside four integrated ones. Each integrated subscore is the average of two skill subscores:
| Subscore | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Reading | Reading alone |
| Listening | Listening alone |
| Writing | Writing alone |
| Speaking | Speaking alone |
| Literacy | Reading and writing |
| Comprehension | Reading and listening |
| Conversation | Listening and speaking |
| Production | Writing and speaking |
Some schools set a minimum subscore as well as an overall score, for example a Writing minimum for a writing-heavy program. Duolingo advises schools to build their rules around one set of subscores, not both.
What is a good Duolingo English Test score?
The one your school asks for. Duolingo has no pass mark and tells test takers to check each university’s website for its requirement. If a school states a CEFR level instead of a DET number, these are the ranges in Duolingo’s 2026 Scoring Guide. An outside expert panel checked the B1 to C2 ranges in 2023:
| DET score | CEFR level |
|---|---|
| 155 to 160 | C2 |
| 130 to 150 | C1 |
| 100 to 125 | B2 |
| 60 to 95 | B1 |
| 10 to 55 | A1 to A2 |
When you get your Duolingo English Test results
Within 48 hours of finishing, or within 12 hours if you paid for Faster Results. Proctors review your session first, and you get an email when the result is certified. Log in at englishtest.duolingo.com and you’ll find it under My Tests.
If proctors find a rule was broken, the result isn’t certified, and you’d have to test again.
Your certificate and sending your scores
Your certificate is the certified result in your DET account. You share it online with the Send Results button, to as many institutions as you want, for no fee, and they can see it as soon as it’s sent. Nothing has to be mailed, and you don’t have to choose schools before you test.
A school sees what you see: your overall score and subscores. It can also read your Writing Sample and watch your Speaking Sample, which is a video, so they see you as well as hear you. Schools only see the samples from the test you send them.
Certified scores are valid for two years. Duolingo’s reasons include that language skills, writing and speaking above all, can fade when you stop using them.
