To pass the journeyman electrician exam in Texas, California or Washington you need 70%, and Texas asks for it on the code part and the calculations part separately. Enter your exam date and the planner spreads 29 short lessons over the days you have left, then ends with our 20 practice questions and a redo of the ones you missed.

Texas gives you 110 minutes for 26 calculation questions and 130 for 59 code questions, so a plan that leaves the formulas to the last week doesn't work. Pick the date of your test and how long you can study each day. You’ll get a plan that takes you right up to the test.

How do you pass the journeyman electrician exam?

  1. Download your state's candidate bulletin and note how many questions come from each area. In Texas, branch circuits, wiring methods and equipment carry 10 questions each on the code part.
  2. Study from the NEC edition your exam uses: 2026 in Texas since September 1, 2026, and 2023 in California.
  3. Drill calculations against the clock. Texas gives 110 minutes for 26 calculation questions, and you need 70% on that part on its own.
  4. If your exam is open book, practice finding answers in the index and tables. California has a short video on searching its on-screen code books.
  5. Answer by the main rule. The Texas bulletin says to ignore code exceptions and optional calculation methods unless a question asks for them.
