How much the FAA written exam costs

The FAA written exam cost is $175 a test. That price comes from PSI Services, the testing company that runs the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) knowledge tests, not from the FAA, and you pay it to PSI when you book. PSI’s FAA page gives one price for an airman knowledge test and doesn’t list a lower price for a retake. Eligible military members, families and some government civilians can test at no charge at the services’ own sites.

What does the FAA written exam cost at PSI?

PSI’s FAA site answers it directly: the price for an airman knowledge test is $175.

PSI’s bulletins say that if you arrive late, you may not be let in and may lose your fee. Missing the appointment, or arriving without the right ID or authorization, means you can’t test as booked.

Refunds when you cancel

PSI says you can cancel and get a full refund up to 24 hours before your appointment, as long as you paid within the past year. If an emergency closes the test center, PSI reschedules you at no extra charge.

Testing at no cost for the military

PSI says FAA exams are available with no fee at locations of the Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council (JSAMTCC) Airman Knowledge Testing program. You may be eligible if you are an active-duty, guard or reserve member of the US military, their dependent, a military retiree, or a Department of Defense or Department of Homeland Security civilian. Contact the JSAMTCC testing center to check.

Vouchers for schools and employers

Flight schools, employers and other organizations can buy test vouchers from PSI at $175 each, plus applicable tax. PSI says a voucher is valid for one year from the date it’s issued and can’t be extended past that. Ask your school whether it has one for you before you pay yourself.
