Official GRE practice tests and books

ETS makes the only real GRE questions, and its best tools are free: two full POWERPREP Online practice tests that look and work like test day. Start there, then add the official books if you want more real questions.

Free from ETS

  • POWERPREP Online: two full-length practice tests in the real test interface. One can be taken untimed, but then you don’t get Verbal and Quant scores.
  • POWERPREP Test Preview Tool: shows the question types and on-screen tools, like the calculator and the mark-and-review feature.
  • Math Review: a free PDF covering all the math on the test, linked to free Khan Academy videos.
  • The full pool of Issue essay topics. Your essay prompt will come from it.

Paid official prep

ETS shows prices for your country when you buy, so they vary. The question types in the books are the same as on today’s test. If a book still covers the Argument essay, skip that part: it was dropped in September 2023.

  • POWERPREP PLUS Online: three more full-length tests, sold one at a time, with explanations and essay scores.
  • The Official Guide to the GRE General Test, Third Edition.
  • Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions and Official GRE Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions, Volume 1, Second Edition.
  • ScoreItNow! Online Writing Practice: two essay topics with instant scores.

How to use them

  1. Take POWERPREP Online Test 1 timed, early on, to see your starting point.
  2. Study your weak question types with the books or a course.
  3. Save POWERPREP Online Test 2 for a few weeks before your test.
  4. If you buy POWERPREP PLUS, spread the tests out and review every miss.
