How to book, reschedule or cancel the GRE

You book the GRE in your ETS account, at a test center or at home. Dates are open all year. Register at least two days before the day you want. To reschedule, do it at least four days before your test; it costs $55.

How to register

You can also register by phone for a test center in the US, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada: 1-609-771-7670 or toll-free 1-866-473-4373. In Mainland China, test center bookings go through NEEA instead.

  1. Check that the name you’ll use matches your ID exactly, first and last name, with no nicknames.
  2. Create an ETS account, or sign in to the one you have.
  3. Choose the GRE General Test, then pick at home or a test center.
  4. Pick a date and time. At-home appointments run around the clock, seven days a week.
  5. Pay the fee: $249 in most of the world as of October 2026. You get an email confirmation.

How to reschedule

Reschedule online in your ETS account, or by phone. You must do it no later than four days before your test date (ten days in Mainland China). For a Saturday test in the US, that means by Tuesday. It costs $55. You can’t move the test more than a year from your original date.

Canceling

Cancel by the same four-day deadline and you get half the test fee back. After that, the fee is lost.

Retakes and score timing

  • You can take the GRE once every 21 days, up to five times in any rolling 12 months. Canceled scores still count toward this.
  • Official scores reach you and your schools about 8 to 10 days after the test, so book with your application deadlines in mind.
  • Scores can be sent for five years after your test date.
