The Maine driver’s handbook: the Driver’s License Manual

Its official name is the Maine Driver’s License Manual, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) calls it the study guide for the written test. The Maine driver’s handbook covers your license, Maine’s laws, the rules of the road and how to share the road with others.

What’s in the Maine driver’s handbook?

Its sections, in order:

  • Section 1, Your Driver’s License: license classes, permits, tests, renewal and losing your license
  • Section 2, State Laws and Rules: titles, registration, insurance, inspection and car care
  • Section 3, Ready to Drive: vision, fatigue, distractions, alcohol and drugs
  • Section 4, Before You Drive: seat, mirrors, safety belts, air bags and children
  • Section 5, Getting Started: starting, stopping, steering and backing
  • Section 6, Rules of the Road: right-of-way, signals, signs, pavement markings and lanes
  • Section 7, General Driving: turns, intersections, roundabouts, passing, school buses and parking
  • Section 8, Managing Time and Space: speed limits, stopping distance, following distance and signals
  • Section 9, Avoiding Crashes: emergencies, crashes and vehicle problems
  • Section 10, Sharing the Road: pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, large vehicles and emergency vehicles
  • Section 11, Special Driving Challenges: night driving, work zones, rural roads, bad weather and wildlife
  • Section 12, Test Your Knowledge: ten questions, with the answers

Practice questions in the manual

Sections 1 to 11 each end with practice questions, and the BMV’s exam page says they’ll help you prepare for the written test. They’re open questions with no answers printed, so check each one against its section. Section 12 is a short multiple-choice test with an answer key.

Sections worth extra time

Some sections pack a lot of rules and numbers into a few pages:

  • Section 4, for the safety belt and child seat law
  • Section 7, for school buses and parking
  • Section 11, for moose and deer safety

Other manuals and the appendix

The Driver’s License Manual is for cars. The manual says the BMV has separate study manuals for a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and for a motorcycle endorsement. Its Appendix A lists the reasons an examiner may refuse a road test and the documents that prove Maine residency and legal presence.
