Montana driver’s license appointments

The Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) recommends an appointment for every visit, and you can book one online or by phone. You make Montana driver’s license appointments for the written test, the road test and other visits to the MVD’s driver exam stations, such as applying for an ID card.

How do you book a Montana driver’s license appointment?

There are two ways:

  • Online, on the MVD’s cars.dojmt.gov site (choose Appointment Scheduling), where you can book, view, change or cancel an appointment
  • By phone, through the Customer Care Center at 1-406-444-1772

When you book the permit test, say it’s for a regular written exam.

Do you need an appointment?

The MVD’s answers to common questions say an appointment is always recommended. The Montana Driver Manual says two things. Its first chapter says some stations require one, and at stations that take online bookings you need one for everything except renewing or replacing a Montana license. A later section says all driver license stations require scheduled appointments. Book ahead, and you’re covered under both.

Before your appointment

If you qualify, you can pre-apply on the same cars.dojmt.gov site and fill in your details before you go.

Is there a Montana department of licensing?

Driver licensing is run by the Driver Services Bureau of the Motor Vehicle Division, part of the Montana Department of Justice. The MVD’s website is mvdmt.gov, and the address dojmt.gov/driving forwards there. Its mailing address is P.O. Box 201430, Helena, MT 59620‑1430. To reach it:

The MVD lists each driver license exam station, with its hours, on its website.
