NBDHE practice test: the JCNDE’s official modules

The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) sells its own NBDHE practice test through Pearson VUE. A full form has 180 questions in 240 minutes and costs $100, and you can buy single modules from $20. The JCNDE also posts free sample questions as a PDF. Neither predicts your score on the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE), and the JCNDE says so plainly.

What’s in the NBDHE practice test?

Pearson VUE lists four timed modules and a full form that holds all four. Each has two versions, numbered 101 and 102.

A full form costs $75 less than buying its four modules one by one. You get 30 days from payment to finish, and you can log back in and review while time is left on the timer. You need a separate Pearson VUE account for this, even if you’ve used one to book the real exam.

The module names follow the test specifications in use before the November 2026 update. The JCNDE warns that practice content may or may not match the types of questions on the exam you sit.

How your NBDHE practice test results work

You see raw scores: how many you got right overall and in each major area, or in the one area a module covers. There’s no penalty for guessing, in practice or on the real exam.

Don’t read too much into the number. The practice modules have fewer items than the exam, and Pearson VUE’s page says their results haven’t been correlated with NBDHE scores. The JCNDE says not to compare the two. They’re for personal study.

Free NBDHE sample questions

The JCNDE’s sample questions are available at no charge. Test constructors wrote them so you can see the types of questions and formats on the exam. The NBDHE Technical Report adds that released practice items are no longer used for licensure, and that some may be outdated.

The Pearson VUE tutorial

At the test center you can take an optional 15-minute tutorial before you start. Pearson VUE also offers the tutorial as a download, so you can learn the screens at home. It needs a Windows PC and won’t run on a Mac.

Quizlet sets, flashcards and other practice

Quizlet decks and flashcards are made by students and companies, not the JCNDE. Some may be fine for revision. Steer clear of any that claim to hold real exam questions, because sharing remembered questions breaks the exam rules.
