What the NCLEX-RN plan lists under pharmacology
The RN plan’s related content for this category comes under nine headings:
- Adverse effects, contraindications, side effects and interactions
- Blood and blood products
- Central venous access devices
- Dosage calculations
- Expected actions and outcomes
- Medication administration
- Parenteral and intravenous therapies
- Pharmacological pain management
- Total parenteral nutrition
The NCLEX-PN plan keeps five of these: side effects and interactions, dosage calculations, expected actions, medication administration and pain management.
Dosage calculations on the NCLEX
Both plans include performing the calculations needed to give medications and using clinical decision-making when you calculate doses, and the PN plan adds calculating and monitoring IV flow rates. You’ll have an on-screen calculator during the exam. A handheld calculator or a conversion table counts as a prohibited aid.
Other NCLEX medication tasks in the test plan
Most medication tasks sit inside the category itself. The RN plan lists reviewing contraindications, lab results, allergies and possible interactions before you give a medication, handling high-risk medications safely, taking part in medication reconciliation and teaching clients about their medications. Outside it, Basic Care and Comfort includes checking for food-medication interactions, and lab values sit under Reduction of Risk Potential, on our test plan page.
Where can you practice NCLEX pharmacology questions?
Three of our 20 free practice questions are on pharmacology, each with a rationale. Each category of the 2026 test plans also ends with an official sample item, and the paid question banks we priced are on our where-to-learn page.
