Booking a New York DMV appointment for your permit test

Make a reservation on the DMV website before you go. When an office is busy, it may only let in people who booked. Search for your office by city or ZIP code, open its details, and pick a time. Not every office takes reservations, so check yours first.

How to book

  1. Use DMV’s pre-screening tool on dmv.ny.gov. It tells you which forms and proofs to bring.
  2. Open DMV’s office locations page and search by your city or ZIP code.
  3. Choose View Details for the office you want, then make a reservation if it offers them.
  4. Turn up with your documents in one folder, your glasses if you wear them, and the fee.

Under 18? You might not need an appointment

If you’re under 18 you can take the permit test online at home instead, with a parent or guardian watching. See our page on the online permit test.

Booking the road test is different

The road test comes later, once you’ve held your permit and practised. You book it separately, online or by phone on 1-518-402-2100.
