New York · Permit test

Can you take the New York permit test online?

Yes, if you’re under 18. You can take the permit test at home on a computer while a parent or guardian supervises. If you’re 18 or older, you still take it in person at a DMV office.

How it works

  1. Start with DMV’s online pre-screening on dmv.ny.gov.
  2. Take the test at home, with your parent or guardian watching.
  3. Wait 3 business days while DMV checks your result and documents.
  4. Visit a DMV office to finish. Your parent or guardian completes form MV-263 there.

Don’t go to the office too early

DMV needs those 3 business days. If you visit an office sooner, you’ll have to take the test again there.

Another option: take it at school

Some high schools run the written test on site through DMV’s OKTA program. You can do it from age 15 years and 11 months, in English or Spanish.
