Is there a free OAT practice test?

No official one. The Optometry Admission Test (OAT) Program, which the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) governs, sells a full practice test of six modules, or each module on its own, online through Prometric. For a free OAT practice test or free questions, you need a prep company; those are on the study options page.

  • $100The full practice test, all six modules
  • $20Each module bought on its own
  • 3 hours 35 minutesTime allowed for the full practice test

What’s in the official OAT practice test?

ModuleItems
Biology 20140
General Chemistry 20130
Organic Chemistry 20130
Reading Comprehension 20125
Physics 20140
Quantitative Reasoning 20140

The OAT Program says the questions follow the test specifications and are formatted as they are on the real test. The modules sold one at a time are identical to the six in the full test. Reading Comprehension 201 has 25 items, half the 50 on the real Reading Comprehension test.

The full test runs in timed sections with no break. Once you click Begin Test, you have to finish in the time allowed, and you have 24 hours from purchase to take it. Each single module also has to be taken within 24 hours of purchase, and any test ends when its time runs out, even mid-question.

Are there free OAT sample questions from the OAT Program?

No. The program’s practice questions are copyrighted and come only in the paid practice test. Its website offers no past papers or released tests. The Candidate Guide says real exam questions are confidential, and that memorizing, sharing or posting them can get your scores voided.

The Candidate Guide also says practice questions show you the kinds of questions you’ll meet, not how you’ll score, and warns against preparing only with practice questions.

Is the official OAT practice test online, or a PDF?

The OAT Program’s practice test is bought and taken online in Prometric’s system, which the OAT site links as the place to buy it. The OAT site lists no PDF version.

To get used to the test screens without paying, use the OAT tutorial on Prometric’s site. You get a 15-minute tutorial at the start of your real appointment too. Prometric also runs a Test Drive, a 15-minute generic sample test with a practice check-in, and lists its own price for it.

How many OAT examinees use the official practice test?

In the program’s 2025 Examinee Information Report, 75.4% of the examinees who answered said they had taken, or planned to take, an OAT practice exam from the OAT Program. That share has been between 75% and 79% every year since 2021.
