OAT prep courses and study options

The Optometry Admission Test (OAT) Program doesn’t endorse any prep course, and it says it has no data on what those courses contain or how well they work. Its own OAT prep material comes first in the list: the Candidate Guide, the reference text list and a paid practice test. Paid courses follow, with prices from their own sites in October 2026.

Do you need an OAT prep course?

The OAT Program doesn’t say you do. It asks anyone thinking about a course to check carefully that the material matches the current content of the OAT. That matters more since June 2026, when the Organic Chemistry specifications were updated.

In the program’s 2025 Examinee Information Report, 59.0% of the examinees who answered said they took no review course at all.

OAT prep material from the OAT Program

  • The Candidate Guide, with the content specifications for every test, the scoring rules and the test day rules.
  • The OAT Reference Text List: biology, chemistry, physics and math textbooks that OAT item writers use.
  • The official practice test, sold as a full test or as six separate modules through Prometric.
  • The OAT tutorial, which you can explore on Prometric’s site and also get at the start of your appointment.

What to check before you pay for OAT prep

  • Whether the organic chemistry material follows the specifications updated in June 2026.
  • Whether full-length practice tests match the real format: 230 items across four tests, in the same order and timing.
  • How long access lasts compared with your test date. Once your application is approved, you have six months to test.
  • What a score or pass guarantee actually promises. The OAT has no passing score, and schools set their own expectations.
  • Whether you can try it first. OAT Bootcamp and Crack the OAT both let you start without paying.

OAT question of the day and other free prep

  • OAT Bootcamp emails an OAT question of the day each morning. It calls the service completely free.
  • Crack the OAT has a free diagnostic test across all four OAT sections, with no credit card needed.
  • OAT Bootcamp and Chad’s Prep let you create an account at no charge before you buy a membership.

Questions from prep companies are written by those companies, not by the OAT Program. Real OAT questions are confidential, and the Candidate Guide bans sharing remembered ones.

Books for OAT prep

The OAT Program doesn’t publish a review book. The Candidate Guide says items aren’t based on specific textbooks, and the reference list names the latest editions of standard college texts, such as Campbell and Reece’s Biology and Klein’s Organic Chemistry, as some of the sources item writers use. Prep company study guides are their own work.
