Iowa plumbing license

Iowa's Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board, part of the Department of Inspections, Appeals and Licensing (DIAL), issues apprentice, journeyperson and master licenses. Four years in a registered apprenticeship and an open-book exam get you an Iowa plumbing license at journeyperson level.

ApprenticeAge 18, a high school diploma or GED, and a place in a US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship, working under a licensed journeyperson or master
JourneypersonAge 18 and 4 years of experience as an apprentice (from 2010 on, in a registered program), plus the journeyperson exam

What's on the Iowa plumbing license test?

You send the board an exam approval application with $35 per exam. Once approved you register with Kirkwood Community College, which runs the exams at 16 sites around the state, and you can test as often as you need within a year.

The journeyperson plumber exam (with gas) has 75 questions in 3 hours, and the master exam 125 questions in 6 hours. Both are open book, using the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code and Iowa's 2024 amendment booklet, and you need 75% to pass. Permanent tabs and highlighting are fine; notes and sticky tabs aren't.

Kirkwood lists its fee as $119 per plumbing exam, while DIAL's journey and master pages show $99 and $95. Check the amount when you register with Kirkwood at 319-398-1022.
