Master plumbing license: who qualifies and what the exam is like

A master plumbing license sits above journeyman. In Virginia, Iowa and Texas you need time as a licensed journeyman first: 1 year in Virginia, 2 years in Iowa and Texas. New York City asks for 7 years of experience in total. The exams are longer too, up to 308 questions in Texas.

What a master plumber can do

It depends on the state. In Texas, a master can directly supervise an apprentice on any job site, and a tradesman on jobs other than one- and two-family homes. In New York City, getting the master license also means showing insurance and a business location in the city.

Running a plumbing business can need a separate contractor license, as in California, North Carolina and Tennessee.
