Plumbing license lookup: check a plumber's license

Use the free search run by the board that licensed the plumber. Each plumbing license lookup tool covers one state, or in New York City one city, so you can see a license's status. Search by license number if you have it.

How does a plumbing license lookup work?

  1. Ask for the license number. Illinois requires plumbing adverts to show it.
  2. Open the lookup for the state where the work is, not where the company is based.
  3. Check the name, license type and expiry date match the person or business you're hiring.
  4. For a business, check the contractor license too, where your state has one.

States not in this list

Your state's licensing agency runs its own search. The boards page shows who licenses plumbers in the states covered here.
