The Praxis Study Companion: ETS’s free official study guide

ETS publishes a free Study Companion for every Praxis test. It’s the official study guide: it tells you exactly how long the test is, how many questions it has, what topics it covers and how much each one counts, and it includes sample questions with explained answers. Download the one for your test code first, before you buy anything else.

What’s inside

  • Test at a Glance: the test code, time, number of questions, question types and calculator rules.
  • Content categories, with roughly how many questions and what percentage of the test each one is.
  • A detailed list of every topic that can be tested.
  • Discussion questions to check your understanding (no answers given).
  • Sample questions with answers and explanations.
  • For tests with essays, sample prompts and scored example responses.

Finding the guide for a Subject Assessment

Every Subject Assessment, from Elementary Education to Speech-Language Pathology, has its own Study Companion. Search for your test on the ETS site and open its page. The guide is linked there, or you can request the free guides through ETS’s Study Companion form. Make sure the test code matches yours exactly, because some subjects have more than one version.

How to use it

  1. Read the Test at a Glance page and note the time and number of questions, so you can work out your pace.
  2. Go through the topic list and mark each topic as known, shaky or new.
  3. Spend most of your time on the biggest categories where you’re shaky.
  4. Do the sample questions without looking at the answers, then read every explanation, even for the ones you got right.
  5. Finish with the free Interactive Practice Test that comes with your registration, under real timing.
