Is an SIE license the same as a certification?
No. FINRA gives no certificate or registration for an SIE pass. Your result sits on file, and when a firm files a Form U4 for you, it’s brought into FINRA’s CRD system.
FINRA warns that this only works if the details you enrolled with match the firm’s U4 exactly. If they don’t, you may have to take the exam again, so enroll with the same details a firm will use on your U4.
How long does an SIE pass last?
Four years from the day you pass. If you register as a general securities representative within that time, you only need to pass the Series 7.
If you later leave a representative-level registration, the four years run from the date that registration ends.
SIE jobs: which exam comes next
FINRA says the SIE lets you show your industry knowledge before you join a firm. On its career page, each job path pairs the SIE with a qualification exam:
| Job path | Exam after the SIE |
|---|---|
| Sales or relationship management | Series 6, 7, 22 or 82, depending on the products |
| Trading | Series 57 |
| Investment banking | Series 79 |
| Research | Series 86 and 87 |
| Operations | Series 99 |
You must be associated with a FINRA member firm to take any of these. FINRA’s Financial Industry Networking Directory (FIND) connects people with member firms recruiting for full-time jobs and internships.
Your state adds its own rules
FINRA registration isn’t the whole picture. Each state can add requirements of its own, and NASAA says passing one of its exams, the Series 63, 65 or 66, is normally a prerequisite for a state license. Check with the securities regulator in each state where you’ll work.
