Teacher salary in Texas: the state minimum

Teacher salary in Texas has a state floor, not a single figure. The Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) minimum salary schedule for 2025‑2026 starts at $33,960 a year on a 10-month contract with no credited experience, and reaches $55,030 at 20 years or more. TEA says no district may pay less than the state base salary for a teacher’s credited years. TEA’s salary pages publish only this minimum, so check a district’s own pay scale for what it pays.

These are selected steps from TEA’s 2025‑2026 schedule, which lists every year from 0 to 20. The annual figures are for a 10-month contract, and they’re the least a district can pay, so a district can pay more. In October 2026, 2025‑2026 was the latest schedule on TEA’s page, so look there for a 2026‑2027 one. For comparison, the 2024‑2025 schedule started at $33,660.

Who the minimum salary schedule covers

TEA’s schedule applies to classroom teachers, full-time librarians, full-time counselors and full-time registered nurses. Under Texas Education Code §21.401, a 10-month contract means at least 187 days of service, unless a district uses the furlough program in §21.4021.

Your step depends on your credited years of experience, which the Commissioner’s Rules in §153.1021 and §153.1022 define.

Your service record and your step

TEA doesn’t keep service records or review them for pay steps. That’s your district’s job, and if you’ve worked in more than one district, you ask each one for its record. A service record shows the years you start a year with, so your first year shows as 0 and your second year starts at 1.

Ask your district which forms it needs to place you on the schedule, such as college employment verification. If you think a record is wrong, contact the district that made it.
