Citizenship test pass rates: how hard is it?

To show how hard the citizenship test is, USCIS publishes pass rates: for fiscal year 2022, 95.7% of applicants passed the naturalization test, counting retests. About 88% passed at their first interview. These figures predate the 2025 test, and USCIS hasn’t published rates for it yet.

Could you pass the US citizenship test?

Try our 20 practice questions built on the 2025 list of 128 and the USCIS study guide. The real test needs 60%, so 12 right out of 20 is the same bar.

Is the citizenship test harder now?

There’s more to learn. The 2025 test asks up to 20 questions from a list of 128, where the 2008 test asked up to 10 from 100. The pass mark is still 60%, and USCIS hasn’t yet published pass rates for the new version.
