How to study for the citizenship test

Learn the official question list for your version, the answers that depend on where you live, and enough reading and writing to pass the English part. Put in your interview date and the planner spreads all of it into daily lessons, so you can study for the citizenship test in the days you have left. If you filed before October 20, 2025, it adds a chapter on the 2008 list’s different questions.

How do you study and prepare for the citizenship test?

  1. Find your version from your N-400 filing date: 128 questions if you filed on or after October 20, 2025, 100 if you filed before.
  2. Download the list for that version. Every civics question comes from it.
  3. Look up the answers for where you live: one of your U.S. senators, your U.S. representative, your governor and your state capital.
  4. Practice answering out loud, with someone reading the questions to you.
  5. Practice reading and writing sentences that use the official word lists.
  6. A few days before your interview, check the USCIS test updates page for the current names of officials.

What to study if you’re 65 or older

Under the 65/20 rule you only need the 20 starred questions on your list, and you can take civics in your own language. The planner covers the whole list, so focus on the starred questions within each lesson.
