Free official USMLE practice: sample questions and NBME self-assessments

Looking for the Free 120? Start with USMLE’s own free sample set: more than 100 questions for each Step, as a PDF and in a copy of the real test software. For a scored practice exam, NBME sells a self-assessment for each Step, from $62 a form.

Free sample questions for each Step

They’re written by the people who make the real exam, so the style, screens and timer are what you’ll see on test day.

  • Step 1: a PDF, plus the interactive testing experience. If your exam is on or after May 14, 2026, use the new version, which has the 30-minute blocks.
  • Step 2 CK: a PDF and the interactive version. The new version, with 30-minute blocks, is for exams on or after May 7, 2026.
  • Step 3: sample questions in the interactive testing experience, including six practice CCS cases, plus a new 2026 software preview.

Practice at a Prometric center

Once you have your scheduling permit, you can book a USMLE practice session at a Prometric test center, for a fee. It’s a way to see the check-in and the room before the real day.

What these won’t give you

None of the official materials turns a percentage into a USMLE score. The NBME reports give a probability of passing for Step 1 and Step 2 CK, not a promise. Our own 20-question practice test is original, not official, and works best as a quick check between these.
