Can you take the USMLE online?

No. Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 3 are only given in person, on a computer at a Prometric test center. There’s no at-home option. But a lot of your prep can happen online, including the official sample questions, a practice version of the test software and NBME self-assessments.

Where you can take each Step

  • Step 1 and Step 2 CK: Prometric centers in the U.S. and in many other countries. Outside the U.S. and Canada there’s a region fee.
  • Step 3: Prometric centers in the U.S. and its territories only.

What you can do online

  • Apply and pay through MyUSMLE or the FSMB USMLE portal.
  • Book, reschedule or cancel with Prometric.
  • Try over 100 free sample questions per Step on usmle.org, as a PDF or in the interactive testing experience.
  • Take NBME self-assessments, from $62 a form, to estimate your readiness.
  • Get your results: you’re emailed when your score report is ready.

Practice at a test center

If you’d like to see a Prometric center before the real thing, you can book a USMLE practice session there for a fee. You need your scheduling permit first.

Online courses and books

Many companies sell online USMLE courses, video series and question banks, and popular review books also come as e-books. None of them are official. Compare them on our where-to-learn page, and be careful of anything claiming to have real exam questions. Using leaked USMLE content can get your scores canceled.
