When do USMLE results come out?

USMLE releases scores on Wednesdays. Each release usually covers people who tested in the four weeks before it. The organization that registered you sends an email when your score report is ready. If eight weeks pass with no news, contact USMLE.

The release schedule

USMLE doesn’t publish a fixed release date for each test date. It also doesn’t say how long results take beyond that four-week pattern and the eight-week contact point.

  • Scores come out on Wednesdays, for all three Steps.
  • No new scores are released the week after Independence Day, Thanksgiving or New Year’s Day.
  • Some individual results take longer, for example while a test center report or a possible security issue is checked.
  • USMLE won’t give results by phone, email or fax, and it doesn’t speed up scoring for anyone.

Where to find your score report

Students and graduates of U.S. schools get their reports from NBME through MyUSMLE. That includes Step 3 since January 26, 2026. If your school is outside the U.S., your reports come from FSMB’s USMLE portal.

Each report stays online for 365 days from the email telling you it’s ready. After that, you can only get your result as an official transcript, which costs a fee.

What the report shows

  • Step 1: pass or fail. A failing report also shows how you did in each content area.
  • Step 2 CK and Step 3: a three-digit score, pass or fail, a standard error, strengths and weaknesses by content area, and a chart against recent first-time takers.
  • Step 3: only the first testing day’s date appears on the report and transcript.

Transcripts and ERAS

FSMB provides all USMLE transcripts, for a fee. A transcript lists every Step you’ve taken, including fails and incomplete attempts, but not exams you didn’t show up for. It doesn’t show test accommodations.

Applying to residency through ERAS or ResidencyCAS? Follow that service’s instructions to send your USMLE results. USMLE gives both services the same certified data.

Score rechecks

You can ask the organization that registered you for a recheck, for a fee, within 90 days of your result being released. It rescores your answers on a separate system. USMLE says no recheck has ever changed a score.
