Selective school entry scores in NSW and Victoria

There isn’t one to look up. The New South Wales (NSW) Department of Education says there are no set minimum entry scores for any selective high school, and it doesn’t give families test scores or ranks. In Victoria, the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) doesn’t release individual scores either. So a selective school entry score list you find elsewhere can’t tell you what your child needs this year.

Why is there no selective school entry score in NSW?

The department says the performance needed for an offer depends on four things, so it’s different at every school and every year:

  • How many students apply.
  • How they perform relative to each other in the placement test.
  • How many places the school has.
  • How many offers families decline, for offers from the reserve lists.

The department stopped reporting scores because, it says, they affected student privacy and wellbeing.

How NSW decides offers

Offers go by test performance and the order of your school choices. Under the Equity Placement Model:

  • 80% of places at each school are offered first by test performance, to everyone.
  • The next 20% go to students in four equity groups who haven’t already had an offer, if their performance is within 10% of the lowest general first-round offer, or as the selection committee decides.
  • Equity places that aren’t filled go back to general applicants.
  • You don’t apply separately, and you aren’t told if an offer came from an equity place.

Alexandria Park Community School, Rose Bay Secondary College and Tempe High School have extra places for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. The department says the percentages can change from year to year.

Equal places for girls and boys

From the 2027 intake, every co-educational selective and partially selective high school in NSW offers equal numbers of places to girls and boys. If places for one gender aren’t filled, they go to qualifying students of the other. Offers within each group still go by test performance.

Scores and cut-offs in Victoria

ACER doesn’t give access to the tests or to individual scores after the exam. Places go by exam rank within each offer category, so there’s no fixed cut-off to aim for. The Victoria page explains the categories.
