The official NPPE practice tests
Meazure Learning, the company that delivers the NPPE, runs the official practice test site, which calls them the official online practice tests of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). Every question has appeared on a past NPPE, in English and French, and you take them in the same testing interface as the real exam.
| Practice test | Price |
|---|---|
| Practice test 1, 50 questions | $50 |
| Practice test 2, 50 questions | $50 |
| Tests 1 and 2 combined, 100 questions | $95 |
The 100-question test holds the same questions as tests 1 and 2, so the site suggests buying one 50-question test or the combined one, not all three. Once you’ve bought a test you can take it as many times as you like, until the end date on its product page (October 31, 2027). The questions stay the same each time, and you get a score report showing your strong and weak blueprint areas, with the reasoning behind every correct answer.
The NPPE program says its practice questions aren’t the same difficulty as the real exam, and passing one doesn’t guarantee you’ll pass the NPPE. Some prep companies use Professional Practice Examination (PPE), the general name Engineers Canada gives this step, so you’ll also see “practice PPE exams” for sale.
Is there an NPPE practice test with 100 questions as a PDF?
Not an official one. The official 100-question practice test is an online test, sold for $95 on the practice site and taken in the exam interface; its product page doesn’t offer a download.
Engineers and Geoscientists New Brunswick (APEGNB) says in its NPPE application that no NPPE exams have been released publicly apart from the official practice test questions, and that any copies in circulation were taken through content theft. Sharing copyright practice test questions counts as content theft too. APEGNB lists what can follow: your results withheld, your application rejected, or an investigation for unprofessional conduct if you’re already a member.
NPPE study guide: the blueprint and the suggested textbooks
The blueprint is the real study guide. The NPPE program says the exam is written to the blueprint, not to the textbooks, and any blueprint topic can come up. It also says that, according to the majority of candidates, one law book and one book on professional practice and ethics is a useful mix. Its suggested textbooks are:
- Law for Professional Engineers: Canadian and Global Insights, fifth edition (2019), by Donald L. Marston
- Practical Law of Architecture, Engineering, and Geoscience, second, third or fourth edition (2011, 2015 or 2022), by Brian M. Samuels and Doug R. Sanders
- A Practical Guide to Ethics and Professional Practice for Engineers and Geoscientists, first edition (2022), by Brian M. Samuels and Doug R. Sanders
- Canadian Professional Engineering and Geoscience: Practice and Ethics, fifth or sixth edition (2014 or 2018), by Gordon C. Andrews, Patricia Shaw and John McPhee
You can buy them from the publishers, from bookshops or Amazon Canada, and they may be at a library or a used bookstore. Regulators don’t sell them. The NPPE program says using older material is at your own discretion.
In October 2026, the NPPE program’s blueprint page said a review of the blueprint was in process and estimated to launch in mid-2026, with more information to follow. The 2017 blueprint was the one it published then, so check the page for a newer version before you start studying.
Free NPPE study material
The NPPE program lists these as free study materials:
- The Canadian Intellectual Property Office guides to copyright, industrial designs, patents and trademarks
- Concepts of Professionalism and the Guideline for Ethical Practice, both published by APEGA
- The Royal Bank of Canada article “The Soul of Professionalism”
- The engineering and geoscience act and the occupational health and safety act in your jurisdiction
- The practice standards and guidelines your regulator publishes
How should you plan your NPPE exam preparation?
Build it around the blueprint and the official material, because no course is official. The NPPE program doesn’t offer classes, workshops or study groups, and it says NPPE preparation courses aren’t endorsed by or affiliated with it. Engineers Nova Scotia says the same, and adds that a third-party course comes with no guarantee about its content or how ready it leaves you. Some regulators also offer ethics modules; the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) says its own modules don’t prepare you for the NPPE.
One way to plan your study:
- Read the blueprint and note the question range for each of the six areas.
- Pick one law textbook and one ethics and practice textbook from the list.
- Take an official practice test early and use its score report to find your weak areas.
- If you’ve sat the NPPE before, start from the areas your mastery report marked as not mastered or borderline.
- Add a paid course or question bank only if you want more practice than the official tests give.
