A study plan for the M1 knowledge test
- Read the Official MTO Motorcycle Handbook from the start. It’s online, and it says it must be used together with the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook.
- Then read the two Driver’s Handbook chapters on its test checklist: Safe and responsible driving, and Traffic signs and lights.
- Learn the signs by shape and colour, with the pictures on the road signs page linked here.
- Note the numbers as you go: distances, angles, times of day and speed limits all come up in the handbook.
- Answer the sample question on the handbook’s “Could you pass?” page. If you want more questions, add an app, and look up anything that surprises you in the handbook.
Is there an official M1 practice test?
Not a full one on ontario.ca. The motorcycle handbook’s “Could you pass?” page gives a multiple-choice sample question on group riding and lists the topics the knowledge test may ask about, from motorcycle controls and lane position to helmets, passengers and dangerous surfaces.
Approved motorcycle safety courses
You don’t need a course to take the M1 test. A government-approved motorcycle safety course teaches you to ride: it covers the skills, includes a road test and shortens your time at Level Two. The handbook adds that it may lower your insurance premiums.
Ontario.ca lists approved courses for full-speed motorcycles, for limited-speed motorcycles such as scooters, and for motor tricycles. It doesn’t list course prices, so ask the provider.
How to choose
Studying on your own? Start with the handbook, which says it gives you the information you’ll need to pass your tests, and the two Driver’s Handbook chapters. An app adds questions to practise on, but treat the handbook as the final word.
New to riding? The MTO encourages all new riders to take an approved safety course, to learn riding skills and the knowledge that goes with them. It includes a road test, not the written one, so keep reading the handbook.
Already have a car licence? The Highway Traffic Act’s rules of the road apply to motorcycles too, so the Driver’s Handbook will feel familiar. The motorcycle handbook covers what’s different on two wheels.
