The MTO Driver’s Handbook: your G1 study guide

The Official MTO Driver’s Handbook is the G1 study guide. It’s free to read on ontario.ca, and every test question is based on it. You don’t need to read all of it. Four chapters cover what the knowledge test asks about.

Where to get it

Prefer paper? DriveTest Centres sell the printed handbook for $18.00, cash only. ontario.ca lists it at $14.95 plus tax from retail stores.

Which chapters to study

You can skip the Level Two Road Test and Off-road Vehicles & Snowmobiles chapters for now. They aren’t what the written test is about.

  • Getting Your Driver’s Licence: graduated licensing and the G1 rules, like zero alcohol and no driving from midnight to 5 a.m.
  • Safe and Responsible Driving: the biggest chapter, with intersections, passing, freeways, parking, school buses and emergencies
  • Traffic Signs and Lights: the whole signs section of the test, plus lights, pedestrian signals and road markings
  • Keeping Your Driver’s Licence: demerit points and suspensions, which come up more than you’d expect

Check yourself with the official sample

The handbook has eight sample questions with the answers at the bottom of the page. They show you the style: short questions, four options, one right answer. Eight isn’t much practice, but it’s the only official set.

Looking to book the test, not the book?

You don’t book the G1 at all. Walk into any DriveTest Centre with your ID and the fee, at least an hour before it closes. The only exception is ServiceOntario at Bay and College in Toronto, which works by appointment.
