Becoming a pharmacy technician in Alberta

The Alberta College of Pharmacy puts you on its provisional register first, then asks for a jurisprudence module and exam, Structured Practical Training, both PEBC parts and liability insurance before you join the full register. ACP says you must not practise as a pharmacy technician in Alberta until your practice permit is issued.

What are the pharmacy technician requirements in Alberta?

  • Jurisprudence Learning Module: an online course with nine chapters on Alberta's laws and standards.
  • Ethics & Jurisprudence Exam: you book it once you're on the provisional register. A pass is valid for two years.
  • Structured Practical Training: see the next section.
  • PEBC Qualifying Exam, Parts I and II: results must be current within three years when you apply, or you retake both parts.
  • At least $1 million of personal professional liability insurance in your own name (not needed while you're provisional).

For initial registration you also need an Enhanced Police Information Check from the past six months, notarized ID, a passport photo from the last 12 months and a statutory declaration. CCAPP graduates from English-language programs in Canada generally don't need an English test; internationally educated applicants take academic IELTS or OET.

Structured Practical Training in Alberta

SPT has online modules plus at least two in-person placements of 240 hours or more each, at different sites with different preceptors. You practise 20 to 40 hours a week, one preceptor must be a pharmacy technician, and online modules don't count toward the hours. ACP typically approves preceptors and sites within 15 business days.

If you're on the former SPT program, ACP set firm deadlines: preceptor and site approval before June 2, 2026, completion before December 1, 2026, and documents by December 31, 2026. Hours don't carry over to the redesigned program.

Working on the provisional register

Provisional technicians can work in a pharmacy outside SPT, but not on their own: a supervising regulated member has to be there. Once registered, you renew your permit each year after submitting your CCP requirements.
