Official TEF Canada and TCF Canada sample tests and books

There’s no single handbook for either test. The official free material is a set of sample tests. CCI Paris Île-de-France has TEF samples for all four skills, with audio, and France Éducation international has TCF samples. For a book, CCI points to Hachette FLE’s TEF training book. Start with the free samples. They show you the real question types.

TEF Canada: free samples from CCI Paris Île-de-France

You get a PDF for each skill, plus the listening audio as a ZIP file. CCI also has short interactive tutorials for each test and four preparation workshops on YouTube.

TCF Canada: free samples from France Éducation international

France Éducation international publishes sample questions and tasks for the TCF. Approved centres like the Université de Sherbrooke and Memorial University point candidates to them. Sherbrooke also suggests RFI’s Le français facile for listening and TV5MONDE for practice on the required tests.

Books

The book CCI Paris Île-de-France links to is TEF (Test d’évaluation de français), nouvelle édition, livre d’entraînement, from Hachette FLE. It covers the TEF in general, not only the Canada version.

Be careful with “TEF PDF” and “TCF sample papers PDF” files shared online. Unless they come from CCI, France Éducation international or a known publisher, you can’t tell if they’re real, current or legally shared.

Check your target before you study

Your target level shapes how you prepare. Someone aiming for NCLC 9 for Express Entry needs a different plan from someone who needs NCLC 4 in listening and speaking for citizenship. IRCC lists the levels for each program.
