Canada · French test

Can you take TEF Canada or TCF Canada online?

No. Both tests are taken in person at an approved centre. TEF Canada’s reading, listening and writing tests are on a computer, but you sit them at the centre, and the speaking test is face to face with an examiner. Centres such as the Université de Sherbrooke say plainly that TCF Canada can’t be taken remotely. You can do a lot online, though: book, practise and get your results.

What happens at the centre

  • TEF Canada: reading, listening and writing on a computer. Speaking is with an examiner and is recorded so it can be marked twice.
  • TCF Canada: speaking is face to face with an examiner, in three tasks over 12 minutes.
  • For both, phones and smartwatches must be off, and dictionaries and notes aren’t allowed.

What you can do online

  • Find a centre and register on its website.
  • Practise with free official samples for both tests, including TEF Canada audio files and interactive tutorials.
  • Get TCF Canada results in your online TCF candidate space.
  • Enter your results in your Express Entry profile on the IRCC portal.

Watch out for “online TEF” offers

Websites selling an “online TEF Canada test” are selling practice. IRCC only accepts official TEF Canada or TCF Canada results from an approved centre. A practice score, however good, isn’t proof of language.

Not the same as TCF Québec or TEFAQ

You’ll see TCF Québec and TEFAQ offered by the same centres. They’re separate versions for Quebec’s own programs. IRCC’s Express Entry pages list only TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French.
