General Pharmaceutical Council exam results and pass marks

Your results show three things: your mark for each part, the pass mark for each part and whether you passed overall. In Great Britain, results come from the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and trainees in Northern Ireland get theirs from the Pharmaceutical Society Northern Ireland. The GPhC also shares them with your statutory education body and your education provider.

How is the pass mark set?

The Board of Assessors oversees pass marks. The GPhC periodically sets the passing standard with a modified Angoff method, adds one standard error of measurement (SEM), and keeps the standard steady across sittings with item response theory.

Because each sitting has different questions, the pass mark may vary between sittings, while the standard you need stays the same. The GPhC doesn’t set target pass rates.

You need the pass mark or more in Part 1 and in Part 2 at the same sitting. A strong mark in one part can’t make up for the other, and marks from one sitting can’t be carried forward to a later one.

When do General Pharmaceutical Council exam results come out?

On the results day the GPhC sets for each sitting. For the June 2027 sitting, it’s Tuesday 20 July 2027, after the assessment on Tuesday 15 June.

The GPhC can withhold a result while it investigates alleged misconduct. Published results are final, and individual marks aren’t reviewed again.

If you fail: attempts and appeals

You can sit the assessment at most three times within your time limit to apply for registration, so the GPhC says three attempts aren’t guaranteed. Every earlier valid sitting counts, and once the time limit runs out, no more attempts are allowed.

You can appeal against a fail on two grounds only:

  • Procedural: the GPhC didn’t follow its assessment procedures correctly, and that directly affected your result
  • Exceptional circumstances: a situation you couldn’t have known about before or during the sitting, or the nullification window, that may have affected your performance

If an appeal is upheld, your sitting is nullified; it isn’t turned into a pass. Not asking for a reasonable adjustment you knew you needed isn’t grounds for an appeal. Use the GPhC’s form and meet the deadline given on results day, and if you haven’t heard back by a later sitting’s deadline, the GPhC advises applying for it, if you’re eligible within your time limit.

Nullification, if something goes wrong on the day

If something unforeseeable and significant happens during the assessment, after you’ve declared yourself fit to sit, tell an invigilator straight away. You can then ask the GPhC in writing, with evidence and by its deadline, to nullify the sitting.

If it agrees, you’re treated as not having sat, no marks are released, and a later sitting means paying the fee again. There’s no appeal against a nullification decision.
