How much does the Life in the UK Test cost?

The test costs £50, and you pay it every time you book. That’s the GOV.UK price as of October 2026. The booking site also sells optional extras for a faster or out-of-hours slot, and you need the official handbook to study, which is sold separately.

Fees as of October 2026

WhatCost
The test£50
Super Priority: a test within 24 hours (optional)£30 extra
Short notice: a test within 24 to 72 hours (optional)£25 extra
Out-of-hours test (optional)£25 extra
Sunday test (optional)£25 extra

The £50 fee is from GOV.UK. The extras are listed by the official booking service in its FAQ. If a Sunday test is also within 72 hours of booking, it says you pay only one extra fee.

Refunds

You get your £50 back only if you cancel at least 3 days (72 hours) before the test. Cancel later than that, or don’t turn up, and you lose it.

You also lose it if you bring the wrong ID or refuse to have your photo taken on the day. Ask for a refund within 3 months of the test date.

If you need to take it again

Each attempt costs another £50. There’s no limit on how many times you can take it, so studying properly first is the cheapest way through.

Studying costs extra

The official handbook isn’t free. It’s sold by TSO as a paperback, eBook and audio. Official practice books and an official app are also sold. Some free websites and apps exist too. See our where to learn page for prices.
