United Kingdom · Citizenship test

Can you take the Life in the UK Test online?

No. You take the real test in person, on a computer at a test centre in the UK. What you do online is book it, and practise. There are free practice tests online, but none of them is the real thing, and passing one doesn’t count.

What you can do online

  • Book, change or cancel your test through the official booking service linked from GOV.UK.
  • See your result in your booking account after the test.
  • Practise with free online tests and apps.
  • Buy the official handbook as an eBook or audio download.

Where the real test happens

At one of over 30 test centres in the UK. You choose the centre when you book.

There’s one centre outside the UK, but it’s only for serving members of the British Armed Forces and their dependants. Nobody else can take the test abroad.

Free online practice

Free practice tests are easy to find. They’re useful for getting used to the style of question. But the booking service warns that a lot of unofficial study material online isn’t approved, and some of it may not match the current handbook.

So learn from the handbook first, and use online tests to check yourself. Our 20-question practice test is written from the handbook, and our where to learn page compares other options.

Watch out for test-day rules

Because the test is in person, the centre controls everything. Your phone, watch and any papers go in a locker, and you’re searched before the test. From 1 October 2026, headphones are only available through approved special arrangements, and you can’t bring your own.

Rules and fees can change, so check the official site before your test.
