Right after the test
Staff tell you your result before you leave, and you can also see it in your booking account. If you passed, you get a unique reference number (URN) for your application. If you didn’t, there’s nothing more to do on the day.
Booking again
GOV.UK doesn’t state a waiting period before you can book again. Check the booking site for the earliest date it offers you.
- Book the same way as before, through the official service linked from GOV.UK.
- Pay £50 again. There’s no discount for a retake.
- Use the same rules on ID: the name on the booking must match your ID exactly.
- If a technical problem stopped you finishing, the booking service says you can take it again without paying.
Does failing affect your application?
You need a pass, not a first-time pass. The Home Office caseworker guidance says you may take the test as many times as you need. You use the URN from the test you pass.
Using the time well
Go back to the handbook and work out where you lost marks. Most people slip on dates and names in the history chapter, or mix up the four nations: their saints, parliaments and courts.
Then take full practice tests of 24 questions in 45 minutes. When you’re reliably getting 20 or more, you’re ready to book.
