DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification

To become a DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), you pass three exams within five years: Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), Infection Control (ICE) and General Chairside Assisting (GC). You can take them separately, in pairs or all at once. Anyone can take RHS and ICE, but for GC you need to meet one of three eligibility pathways set by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). Once you’re certified, you renew every year.

  • 3Exams: RHS, ICE and GC
  • 5 yearsTo pass all three
  • Early 2027New CDA pathway officially available

How do you become a DANB certified dental assistant?

  1. Check which GC eligibility pathway you meet, and gather its documents.
  2. Make sure your hands-on CPR, Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is from a DANB-accepted provider and will stay current through your whole 60-day testing window.
  3. Apply to DANB online, by mail or by email, for the exams you want to take now. Full payment is due when you apply.
  4. Book each exam with Pearson VUE once DANB emails you, and sit it within the window.
  5. Pass all three exams within a five-year period, and DANB certifies you as a CDA.
  6. Keep it current by renewing with DANB before it expires.

CDA eligibility pathways for the GC exam

There are no eligibility requirements for RHS or ICE. For the GC exam, or the full CDA exam that includes it, you need one of these, plus current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS:

  • Pathway I: you graduated from a dental assisting or dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), or you hold a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) license from any state except Alabama. Send a certificate, diploma, dated transcript or program director’s letter. If you’ll graduate within 90 days, your program director can fill in DANB’s Intent to Graduate form instead.
  • Pathway II: at least 3,500 hours of dental assisting work over at least two years and no more than four, verified by a licensed dentist on DANB’s Employer Work Experience Statement, plus proof of high school graduation or the equivalent. DANB doesn’t accept employer letters or pay stubs.
  • Pathway III: you were a CDA before, or you graduated from or are enrolled in a CODA-accredited DDS or DMD program, a dental degree program outside the US or Canada, or a DANB-accepted post-baccalaureate program of at least 300 hours linked to a US or Canadian dental school.

For CPR, send a copy of the certificate or both sides of the card, showing the issue and expiration dates, the instructor’s name and your name or signature. DANB accepts courses only from its listed providers, and only if the course included a hands-on exam.

The dentist on a Work Experience Statement must confirm you’ve been trained in tasks such as charting, four-handed dentistry, taking vital signs and preventing and managing emergencies. A dentist licensed in any country can verify work done under them in that country.

A new CDA pathway from early 2027

On September 23, 2026, DANB announced a new CDA pathway for graduates of dental assisting programs that aren’t CODA-accredited but are in schools accredited by an agency the US Department of Education approves. DANB says it will be officially available in early 2027.

Programs have to apply to DANB for approval. To qualify, a program needs at least 900 instructional hours including 300 clinical hours, or 700 hours including 200 clinical hours with the candidate also having at least 200 hours of work experience. DANB said it would approve programs on a rolling basis through the rest of 2026, and says the change doesn’t alter the standard you must meet to earn the CDA.

RHS/ICE, RHS/GC or ICE/GC pair$375
RHS, ICE or GC exam alone$270

Active military personnel pay $425 for the CDA exam, $365 for a pair and $265 for a single exam, with a letter from their commanding officer.

These are the fees in DANB’s 2026 application packets, which DANB accepts through December 31, 2026. If you apply after that, check the current packet.
