DANB CDA practice tests and study options

The practice tests built for DANB exams come from the DALE Foundation, which the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) calls its official affiliate. It sells one for each Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) exam, Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), Infection Control (ICE) and General Chairside Assisting (GC), and a DANB CDA practice test set with all three. DANB itself offers a demo exam that shows the test screens and navigation, and its study guide plans are a free download.

Is there a free DANB practice test?

DANB’s prepare page doesn’t list a free practice test. The DALE Foundation’s practice tests are paid, and DANB doesn’t describe its demo exam as a practice test or give it a price: its purpose is to show you the screens and navigation before exam day.

What DANB does give away is its study guide plans for RHS, ICE and GC. Its exam outlines are on its site too, with each domain’s share of the questions and the references, and the RHS outline adds lists of acronyms and radiography terms.

Which DANB CDA practice test should you choose?

  • Taking all three exams? DALE’s CDA Practice Tests bundle has the RHS, ICE and GC tests, 200 questions each, for less than buying them one by one.
  • Taking one exam, or only RHS and ICE for a state requirement? Buy just those tests.
  • Want teaching as well as questions? DALE’s CDA Exam Prep Bundle adds four review courses, and DALE says it earns 48 continuing education (CE) credits.
  • Testing in Spanish? DANB says the DALE Foundation offers the RHS and ICE practice tests in Spanish.

DALE’s practice tests let you study by topic, bookmark questions and switch to a timed exam simulation. DALE says its questions aren’t from actual DANB exams, and that finishing them doesn’t guarantee a pass.

A study path for the CDA exams

  1. Download the outline for each exam and note the domains with the biggest shares.
  2. Pick DANB’s study guide plan for that exam, and get at least one recommended dental assisting textbook.
  3. Work through the textbook or a review course one content area at a time.
  4. Take a practice test and use your score to plan your review. DANB suggests going back over the chapters for anything you miss.
  5. Run through DANB’s demo exam so the screens and navigation are familiar.
