Florida EPA certification and other states

There’s no state version of Section 608 certification. It comes from a federal regulation, Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 82, Subpart F, so Florida EPA certification is the same credential, from the same approved programs, as a card earned in Texas, California or anywhere else in the US. What a state can add is its own licensing: the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that some state environmental or licensing authorities ask technicians to register or document their certification.

How do you get Florida EPA certification?

The steps are the same in every state: pick your type, choose any program on EPA’s approved list, take the test and get your card. You aren’t limited to programs based in your state. EPA says many programs test all over the country, and some test remotely, so a Florida technician can certify with a program headquartered in Illinois or Texas.

State licenses are separate from EPA certification

Your EPA card lets you handle refrigerant anywhere in the US, but it isn’t a state contractor’s license. Texas and California, for example, license heating and air-conditioning work through their own agencies, so check with yours before you take paid jobs:

  • Texas: the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors program. TDLR says contractors who install, repair or maintain air-conditioning, refrigeration or heating systems must have a TDLR license, and companies must employ a licensed contractor at each permanent location.
  • California: the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), which licenses and regulates the state’s construction industry. Its C-20 classification covers contractors who install, maintain, service and repair warm-air heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems.

For Florida, Georgia or another state, ask the board that licenses contractors there whether your trade needs a state license on top of your EPA card.
