EPA 608 certification cost

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) charges nothing for Section 608 certification. Its rules let each approved program charge a reasonable fee for giving the test, so the EPA 608 certification cost depends on who tests you and whether you buy a course with it. Four programs published prices in October 2026, from SkillCat’s $10 monthly app to Faraday’s $199 course that includes the exam.

What does EPA 608 certification cost at each program?

Each program sets its own price. These are the ones on their sites in October 2026.

ItemFee
Mainstream Engineering: Type I open-book test, first attempt$26.95
Mainstream Engineering: each extra Type I attempt$7.95
Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA): one paper test$32.95 plus shipping
Faraday: EPA 608 course with the online exam$199
SkillCat: app membership with training and the exam$10 a month
  • Mainstream’s price includes one wallet-sized card.
  • ACCA’s price includes the certificate and card.
  • Faraday’s price includes a physical card and lifetime access to the course.
  • SkillCat starts with a 3-day free trial and says the membership includes four attempts at no extra cost.

Only a registered ACCA proctor can order ACCA’s tests, so ask your proctor what they charge you. Mainstream lists its prices on its software page, which also says open-book exams are now bought and taken through an account on its site. Mainstream’s pages for its online and in-person Universal exams don’t show a price.

What else can add to the cost

  • A rushed online booking: Mainstream’s Universal exam must be booked 72 hours ahead, and ProctorU may charge a fee for an earlier slot.
  • Retakes: Mainstream lists $7.95 for each extra Type I attempt. On its Universal test, a retake covers only the sections you failed.
  • Study material beyond the free Type I software, such as Mainstream’s download code for the other types or ACCA’s Technicians Guide and Workbook.
  • A replacement card if you lose yours. The fees are on the card page.

Is EPA certification free?

The certification itself has no EPA fee, but the test isn’t free: every approved program charges something to give it. What you can get for nothing is study material. EPA posts its test topics, it says some websites have free practice questions, and Mainstream gives away its Type I training software.

Section 609 prices

The motor vehicle air-conditioning test under Section 609 is a separate credential with its own prices, such as $23 for the online quiz from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
