Private pilot written exam practice test: 20 PAR-style questions

Here are 20 free questions for the Private Pilot Airplane (PAR) knowledge test, each with one best answer and an explanation. This private pilot written exam practice test is our own, written from the FAA’s Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards (ACS) and the rules it cites. The real PAR test has 60 questions, and some of its questions use charts and figures from the testing supplement, which ours don’t. So use it to check what you know, then practice the chart work before you book.

Question 1 of 20

You’re 34 when you get a third-class medical certificate. For private pilot privileges, how long does it last?

How our 20 questions cover the ACS

The ACS splits private pilot knowledge into Areas of Operation. Nine of ours come from Preflight preparation, because that’s where the regulations, weather, airspace, performance, systems and aeromedical subjects sit. The rest take one to three from each of the other areas. Multiengine operations and postflight procedures have none.

Aim for 14 right out of 20. That’s our own target, set to match the real test’s passing score of 70.

Where else can you take a private pilot written exam practice test?

The FAA doesn’t release its live questions. Its Airman Testing page sends you to PSI’s FAA site for sample tests, which show the test screen and the question style. For chart questions, work with the testing supplement, FAA-CT-8080‑2H, because the test center hands you the same booklet.

For full-length drills, Gleim and ASA sell question banks, and the online ground schools test you as you go.
