INBDE failure rates by year
This is Table 16.1 from the JCNDE’s 2025 Technical Report. “Non” means candidates from non-accredited programs.
| Year | CODA 1st | CODA retake | Non 1st | Non retake | All |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 1.0% | 7.3% | 38.8% | 58.1% | 24.5% |
| 2021 | 1.3% | 16.0% | 33.1% | 55.8% | 22.3% |
| 2022 | 0.8% | 13.2% | 25.3% | 44.7% | 12.1% |
| 2023 | 0.4% | 14.0% | 15.9% | 33.8% | 8.7% |
| 2024 | 4.8% | 32.1% | 25.3% | 52.8% | 16.1% |
| 2025 | 7.2% | 27.0% | 34.9% | 50.5% | 20.8% |
To read a pass rate from a row, take the figure away from 100. So the JCNDE’s 20.8% for all 2025 attempts is 79.2% by our subtraction.
Why does the INBDE pass rate drop in 2024?
The JCNDE marks 2024 as the year a new standard came in. A panel met in January 2024, the JCNDE approved its recommendation that May, and the standard took effect on June 1, 2024. So 2024 covers months under both standards. 2025 is the first full year under the one set in 2024. The report gives the dates but doesn’t say how much of the change comes from the new standard.
How many attempts each figure covers
The 2020 row is small because the INBDE only began on August 1, 2020. The table counts attempts in each group:
| Year | CODA 1st | CODA retake | Non 1st | Non retake | All |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 205 | 69 | 147 | 117 | 538 |
| 2021 | 2,021 | 245 | 1,341 | 971 | 4,578 |
| 2022 | 5,852 | 234 | 2,154 | 1,145 | 9,385 |
| 2023 | 6,659 | 136 | 3,301 | 1,212 | 11,308 |
| 2024 | 6,636 | 168 | 4,137 | 919 | 11,860 |
| 2025 | 6,816 | 608 | 3,480 | 1,335 | 12,239 |
The report doesn’t break these down by school, state or country, and it stops at 2025.
