The Indiana chauffeur license test: the for-hire exam

Paid driving in Indiana now needs a for-hire endorsement on a regular driver's license, and the Indiana chauffeur license test is now the for-hire knowledge exam. It has 25 questions, and you can miss five. Chauffeur's and public passenger chauffeur (PPC) licenses already issued stay valid until the date printed on them.

Who needs a for-hire endorsement

You need one to carry property for hire in a vehicle rated between 16,000 and 26,000 pounds, or to carry paying passengers in a vehicle built for fewer than 16 people, including the driver. It doesn't let you drive a commercial motor vehicle. That takes a CDL.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18.
  • Have held a valid driver's license for more than one year.
  • Pass a vision screening and the for-hire knowledge exam.
  • Pay the one-time $19 endorsement fee, as of October 2026.

How do you study for the Indiana chauffeur license test?

The BMV says to study the Indiana Driver's Manual. Chapter 9 has for-hire sample questions with answers, on things like the 26,000-pound weight limit, stopping 15 to 50 feet from railroad tracks, the 8 feet 6 inch width limit and warning devices for a disabled truck or bus.

Several of those come from the truck and railroad sections of Chapter 7, so read that chapter closely.

If you already hold a chauffeur's or PPC license

It stays valid until it expires. You renew, replace or amend it at a branch, not online. There's no exam to renew unless it has been expired more than 180 days, and there's no endorsement fee when the for-hire endorsement replaces it. The BMV notes you may still need a Medical Examiner's Certificate while driving.
