Scheduling your Indiana driving test

You book the driving skills test online through myBMV or by calling 888-692-6841, at least 48 hours and no more than three weeks ahead. The knowledge exam for your permit needs no booking at all. Before you schedule a driving test in Indiana, check that you've held your permit for 180 days and that you're old enough for a license. Some driving schools give the test too, and you book those with the school.

How do you schedule a driving test in Indiana?

  1. Check that you're eligible: 180 days on your permit, and age 16 with driver education or 16 years and 270 days without it.
  2. Create a myBMV account if you don't have one.
  3. Open Schedule a Driving Test, pick a branch and a time 48 hours to three weeks out.
  4. Confirm the appointment in your myBMV account, under Schedule Driving Test.
  5. On the day, arrive at least 15 minutes early and tell the nearest associate you're there for a skills exam.

When you can't book online

The BMV says online scheduling isn't available if you're a foreign national without a Social Security number, if your learner's permit has expired, or if you renewed it within the last 6 months. In those cases, call 888-692-6841.

The manual adds that you may get a sooner slot by going to a branch in person.

Booking with a driving school instead

You can test with a school instead of a branch if it takes part in the BMV's skills test program:

  • Who can test there: you hold a permit, you've finished training with an Indiana-licensed provider, and you're 16 years and 90 days old, per the BMV's driving test page.
  • That age is later than the license age of 16 on the BMV's driver's license page, so if you're under 16 and 90 days, ask the school or the BMV before you book.
  • You book the time with the school, not with myBMV.
  • Under the manual, a pass with a school counts until your permit expires.
  • You test at a branch instead if your school isn't in the program or you failed either part of the course.

What to bring to the appointment

  • Your valid Indiana learner's permit.
  • Your completed Log of Supervised Driving Practice (State Form 54706).
  • Your driver education completion proof, if you took a course.
  • Under 18, a parent or guardian who can sign for financial responsibility. At 18 or older, a licensed driver to come with you.
  • A registered, insured car that's safe and clean. The test is free at a branch.
